Client: Latina Magazine Project: Online Magazine Publishing Tool URL: http://www.latina.com
Project Calibrate was tasked with re-architecting the Latina.com web site from the ground up using a custom-built content publishing system that would allow non-technical editors to easily publish articles, quizzes, polls and surveys, as well as collect member registration data. In addition, an XML-based tool was created to allow editors to publish images and text directly into animated Macromedia Flash® movies, without the intervention of a design team. This allowed Latina to raise the level of graphic design layout to the standards of a print magazine cover. Latina magazine is the leading lifestyle publication for bicultural Hispanic women in the United States today. Covering the best of Latino fashion, beauty and culture, the magazine also features celebrity profiles and interviews. In addition to being featured on the Adweek Hot List in 2000 and 2001, Latina was named Best Magazine by Advertising Age in 2000. For the first quarter of 2003, Latina was the seventh-fastest growing magazine in America, according to PIB. In order to launch within tight budgetary and schedule constraints, Project Calibrate developed a series of low-cost prototypes and assembled a team of open-source developers to rapidly implement the prototypes in Java on a dedicated web server running Apache Tomcat and a MySQL database.
