United Nations Online Directory of Counter-Terrorism Organizations (con't)

The Challenge:

The project had to be completed within 10 weeks, during which time the entire system would be to designed and built from scratch based on a rough creative brief. The project had an international high-profile and its sponsors originated from several divisions within the UN bureaucracy. Budgetary, personnel, and technical resources were very limited and the system had to be implemented in Lotus Domino on a Notes database.

The Solution:

In order to deliver the project under these difficult circumstances, Project Calibrate devised a non-traditional development methodology that was applied to the particular needs of the project. The approach adapted numerous techniques from "Extreme Programming" and other "agile" development methods. User scenarios were developed in place of the usual up-front technical specifications. Rapid prototyping with a "dummy" simulation of the back-end was employed to create 12 prototypes in less than 4 weeks. Project Calibrate managed a process of heavy client involvement in the development phase. Specialized programming tasks were outsourced using Project Calibrate's extensive network of experts. In an unusual step, graphic design was applied last, in parallel with the database development.

The Result:

The project was delivered on-budget with time to spare for training the UN staff on a content entry workflow.
